Material and Wall Strategy
- PETG is the waterproofing default: near-zero water absorption, excellent layer bonding, and chemical tolerance for washdown environments.
- ASA for sun-exposed outdoor enclosures — same sealing behavior plus UV endurance.
- Walls at 2.4mm+ (6 perimeters): watertightness comes from overlapping extrusion paths; thin walls are where seepage starts.
- Avoid PLA (absorbs water and degrades) and unfilled nylon (swells) for wet duty.
- ABS/ASA bonus path: vapor smoothing melts the surface into a continuous sealed skin — belt and suspenders for critical boxes.
The Gasket Is the Design
Water enters at interfaces, not through walls. The lid joint is where enclosures live or die:
- Tongue-and-groove lid with a TPU gasket: the groove captures a printed Shore 85-90A gasket sized for 20% compression — our two-material sweet spot (rigid box + printed custom gasket in one order).
- Compression comes from fastener spacing: screws every 40-60mm along the seal path; wider spacing lets lids bow and gaps open between screws.
- O-ring grooves print to standard O-ring specs when you'd rather use catalog rings — dimension grooves per the ring maker's chart.
- Cable entries: printed glands work for strain relief but buy real IP-rated cable glands for sealing — a $2 gland beats clever geometry.
- Bottom drains and Gore-style vents: sealed boxes breathe with temperature; a membrane vent prevents the pressure cycling that pumps moisture past seals.
Honest Talk About IP Ratings
An IP67 rating is a certified test result on a specific manufactured product, not a material property — no print service can hand you a rating. Test Before You Trust
