Automotive 3D printing spans a huge range: OEM studios printing design bucks, suppliers prototyping trim, race teams making weekend-deadline brackets, and restorers resurrecting clips that went out of production in 1974. What unites them is the car's brutal environment — vibration, UV, and interior temperatures that hit 85°C on a summer dashboard — which makes material choice the whole game.

What Gets Printed
- Interior trim and panels: replacements, custom console parts, phone/device mounts matched to dash contours.
- Clips and fasteners: the profit-margin heroes of restoration — a discontinued $2 clip that holds a $400 panel, reproduced from measurement.
- Under-hood brackets: sensor mounts, connector holders, cable routing in PAHT-CF.
- Ducting: HVAC and intake prototypes; printed ducts validate flow paths before tooling.
- Prototyping for production parts: fit-check trim through its iterations before injection molds are cut.
- Gaskets and grommets in TPU where sheet stock or discontinued rubber parts fail.
Restoration: The Killer Use Case
For out-of-production vehicles, printing is often the only path: no tooling exists, volumes are single-digit, and originals are unobtainium. The workflow is straightforward — measure or scan the broken original (even a fragment constrains the geometry), model it, and print in a material better than the 50-year-old original plastic. ASA deserves special mention here: its UV stability means the reproduction outlasts what the factory installed.
Fit and Finish Expectations
Interior parts live next to injection-molded surfaces, so finish matters. ASA vapor-smooths to a factory-plastic sheen; light-texture spray paints replicate OEM grain surprisingly well; and printed parts take automotive paint systems (primer, base, clear) exactly like production ABS. For visible parts, note the target finish in the order — matte black interior texture is a solved problem.
